Good to Give Thanks

During the Holidays, many people take the time to give thanks and lend a hand to others.

How do you celebrate the spirit of giving this time of year?  Write on the Good Wall and share your thoughts.

Sandra Jones, Director of Human Resources at Goodwill Industries of Hawaii shares stories of giving, even through a tough economy.  Here’s Sandra’s story:

As we celebrate this Thanksgiving Holiday and reminisce on all we have to be thankful for, I’d like to take this time to give a heartfelt “Thank You” to you our loyal Goodwill shoppers, donors and community supporters.

This past year, many of us were faced with economic and other challenges beyond our control but instead of looking at the glass half empty, we chose to look at the glass half full.  We sought creative ways to capitalize on our Goodwill connection.  As an employee ambassador of Goodwill, I often have the good fortune of hearing of the great ideas, treasures and savings our customers have found.  Just a few weeks ago, one of our applicants proudly walked into her interview and modeled her interview attire that was all purchased from Goodwill.

This past June, an Event Planner shared with me that she had been contacted by a young couple who were getting married and wanted to have a small reception to celebrate with friends and family but when they told her what their budget was, the Event Planner wanted to tell them that it was no way she could assist them on their budget but she saw the excitement in their eyes and decided to shop around for creative solutions.  Within a few days she was able to create a wonderful reception theme around items she found at Goodwill Stores around the island.  It is the before-mentioned stories and the great finds that our customers share with others, that have allowed our retail stores to have impressive sales this past year, despite our tough economic times; which allows us to be able to continue to further our mission of assisting individuals with barriers with job training and finding employment.

Thanks for Giving through your shopping and support, this Thanksgiving!  When you shop at Goodwill, your supporting our mission of helping people with employment barriers to reach their full potential and become self-sufficient.

Sandra Jones,

Director of Human Resources
